12/11/2006 - Mayor Encourages Columbus to Step Up for Central Ohio River Pride Month

Schools, families, churches, neighborhood organizations and local businesses are being encouraged to “hit the streams” as volunteers during the month of May, for the Central Ohio River Pride Month.  The events, coordinated with the Public Utilities Department, offer more ways for volunteers to help “get green” in Columbus and make a difference along area waterways.  Mayor Coleman encourages groups to get involved to deal with the trash and litter left along rivers and streams each winter.  Litter is not only an eyesore; it can affect community pride, water quality, endanger wildlife and promote mosquito growth by providing a place for water to stagnate.

As a result of vandalism to a Rhoads Park sewer structure sometime yesterday, a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) has occurred into the Scioto River in the Fifth Avenue to Trabue Road area.  Vandals stole various parts and also closed a sewer gate, which prohibited flow in a main city trunk sewer and resulted in overflows from manholes located along the Scioto River in that area.
