Wastewater Treatment in Columbus

Loading...

Jackson Pike DigestThe Division of Sewerage and Drainage operates two wastewater treatment plants, Jackson Pike and Southerly. Wastewater from Columbus and 22 contracting suburban communities flows to one of these two plants, who combined treated an average of 208 million gallons per day in 2011, a year with record rainfall of 54.96". The photo to the right shows the sludge digesters at Jackson Pike, which are visible from I-71 south of downtown Columbus.

Two following two Adobe Acrobat PDF files explain the treatment process used at both plants:

Other statistics on wastewater treatment in Columbus can be found in our most recent Department of Public Utilities Annual Report.

Understanding Our Sewer System

Two types of sanitary sewers make up our system: combined and separate. Found in older sections of the city, combined sewers carry both rain water and sewage. The rest of the city is served by separate storm and sanitary lines. Learn more about the pitfalls of these systems & what we are doing to address them.

Alternative Solutions Developing

Green infrastructure offers promising solutions to help remove contaminants from storm water before it reaches our water supply or sewer system. The EPA is strongly promoting the use of green infrastructure to comply with both stormwater regulations and elimination of sewer overflows. They issued a policy in June 2012 to encourage integrated planning in the treatment of storm and wastewater. Read more about how Columbus is responding and the next steps coming.
